for first-time visitors

The general farm tour, perfect for first-time visitors, introduces groups to one of our vibrant farm spaces and the work we do at Harlem Grown. Join us for an interactive tour where we’ll utilize our five senses to learn about our chickens, soil-based beds, and hydroponic greenhouses. Students will get to see firsthand how we grow food and community in Harlem.

Themed Farm Tours

for returning visitors

Soil science

Get ready to dig in at our 134th St Farm and learn why soil is the unsung hero of farming. Students on this tour will transform into scientists, testing our soil, seeing how our composting system turns leftovers into life, and discovering how our smallest creatures play the biggest role in creating healthy soil. Come ready to get your hands dirty!

Plant life cycle

Get to the root of it all on this tour that will guide groups through every stage of the plant life cycle in our outdoor and greenhouse farm spaces. Through hands-on demos, participants will uncover how photosynthesis works and get to explore the underground world of roots and nutrient uptake. By the end, students will be plant experts, identifying different species around the farm.

Food for thought

Ready to plant the seeds of change? On this tour, students will use their critical thinking skills to consider how our work in urban farming is tied to themes of food justice and food sovereignty. Groups are encouraged to upcycle their own containers to participate in a seeding activity on the farm. Join us in empowering our community to take part in our local food system rooted in fresh, culturally relevant, and accessible produce.

Exploring ecosystems

Join us for a student-led adventure around the farm to experience firsthand the hidden connections that make our farm ecosystem thrive. Along the way, students will explore environmental science topics like the water cycle, the greenhouse effect, and nutrient runoff. By the end, groups will piece it all together and create a web that shows how all the living and nonliving components of the farm work together in harmony.
