"Sankofa" Public Art Installation Grand Opening

  • Marcus Garvey Park East Lawn (map)

We are thrilled to announce the grand opening of the Culture, Creativity, & Care Initiative at Marcus Garvey Park on June 18th!

Join us for a collaborative painting party, followed by an artist talk, live music, and an official ribbon cutting of the “Sankofa” public art installation!

“Sankofa” Public Art Installation Rendering

“Sankofa” derives from the Akan African folklore, symbolizing remembrance of things forgotten, and “in order to know our future we must look to our past.”

The installation is simultaneously futuristic and ancestral, and draws upon intersectional cultures including African, Afro-Caribbean and Indigenous craft traditions as well as the everyday histories and contemporary life of the Park.

12 local artists from the Harlem Art Collective and Fable Jones Studios are featured in the inaugural exhibit for this public outdoor art installation at Marcus Garvey Park.

Every month, new artists will be featured on the installation, creating a rotating outdoor gallery as part of “a two-year project that will amplify Harlem’s rich history and culture."
