CULTURE CREATIVITY
& CARE INITIATIVE

AT MARCUS GARVEY PARK

Selection Committee

Harlem Grown will be administering a request for proposals for Summer 2024 as part of its Marcus Garvey Park Culture, Creativity, and Care Initiative. The Marcus Garvey Park Culture, Creativity, and Care Initiative (MGPCCCI) is a two-year multifaceted activation of the public realm that will center and amplify Harlem’s rich history and culture to diverse community members and visitors. With support from the Mellon Foundation’s Humanities in Place initiative, MGPCCI will connect Harlem Grown’s existing network of urban farms and support temporary artist installations, multi-use outdoor art installations, public performances, and programming focused on Harlem and its Black, Latinx, and Indigenous histories and cultures.

Harlem Grown will use a Selection Committee to review proposals to determine awards. We are looking for community members with strong ties to the Harlem community or Marcus Garvey Park.

Committee nominees should be:

  • Reliable individuals with a commitment to the community and shared values

  • Interested in the arts, but no expertise or knowledge in an artistic discipline, arts administration, or community arts programming is required

  • Diverse in terms of ethnicity, gender, age, culture, and professional & personal background

Because of the need to form well-balanced panels, we may not be able to consider all the qualified people who are nominated.  Selected individuals will need to have access to the internet and some technological knowledge including ability to attend virtual meetings. Community members will receive a small honorarium for their time and dedication.

  • Selection Committee members will receive an online panel packet that includes applications to review, a Selection Committee handbook and other required paperwork.

Committee members review and pre-evaluate their assigned applications before the virtual deliberation meeting where they are guided through short discussions about each application prior to settling on a complete list of awarded recommendations based on revised scores.

Panel meetings for RFP FOR VISUAL ART, PERFORMANCES, CULTURAL ACTIVIATIONS & PROGRAMMING for Summer 2024 will occur in the October - December 2023.

  • Committee members are required to:

    • Review Selection Committee handbook, submit paperwork

    • Score applicants (scores due one week before virtual meetings)

    • Participate in a virtual group review meeting with other panelists

    • Communicate availability to participate in virtual meetings in a timely manner
